What to do in Berlin, Germany

Berlin is the capital city of Germany and known for sites like the Berlin wall and the Holocaust Memorial.  Berlin has been nicknamed the Grey City which sounds very depressing, to be honest.  So why would I want to visit Berlin you might ask?  Well, there is so much more to this city than it’s awful, sad history.  Let me explain:

Give me some space! Berlin is a gorgeous city situated in North East Germany spanning over 891.8 km² with a population of 3.5 million people.  In relation to Paris, which is only 105.4 km² with a population of over 2.2 million people, Berlin is the perfect place to go in Europe if you don’t love crowds.

If you like parks, Berlin is the place for you. Berlin is a very green city, physically and environmentally.  Parks, forests, lakes and canals take up 1 third of her surface.  Most people don’t know this but Berlin has more bridges than Venice.

When is the right time to go?  Well, it is always the right time to go but the best time to go would be in summer.  Summers are mild and winters are wet.  They have about 106 rainy days per year. Oh and don’t forget beer lovers, Bierfest in Berlin is in August.

Public transport in Berlin is great! So many options like the S-Bahn (Elevated Train system), U-Bahn (Classic subway), Busses and Trams.  Many of the sights are within walking distance of the public transport system.  Berlin is also a great city to explore by foot or on a bicycle because of its’ flat surface and absence of hills.

Things to do in Berlin? In Berlin, you will be spoiled for choice.  There is something for everyone!  For some History, go see the Brandenburg Gate, Holocaust Memorial, and the Berlin Wall.  For a magical view of the city, go to the Reichstag dome.  Visit one of the civic squares: Alexander Platz or Potsdamer Platz (Berlin’s own Time Square).  If you love the outdoors, like me, you definitely want to go canoeing on the river Spree or visit Landwehrkanal, Korwerpark, Mauerpark and the Tiergarten.

What will I eat? Berlin is all about the food and going out in Berlin for dinner is relatively cheap.  You will find pork schnitzel, eisbein, sauerkraut, sausages, pretzels and lots of beer. Bockwurst is found at most Biergarten and currywurst stands.  Berlin = carnivore heaven.

Berlin has so much to offer any traveler.  Great culture, interesting history, beautiful parks and fabulous food.  It is all I need to feel right at home.  See you soon Beautiful Berlin!
