Places to visit in Turkey: Istanbul

Turkey was my first ever overseas trip.  October 2007, I was 25 years old. (Oops, just gave away my age) Anyway,  I won the incentive trip to Turkey through the company I worked for.  Of course, I was over the moon but equally sad that I couldn’t take my daughter and girlfriend (now wife) with.  I don’t like going away without them!

This is how I spend my 5 days in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Hotel in Taksim Square.

My view from the hotel room – not a very nice view 🙁

Some sightseeing:  Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar and some other I can’t remember.

We cruised between Asia and Europe.

In South Africa, the taxi drivers have a bad reputation but the taxi drivers in Turkey are even worse.  They drive like maniacs!

The beer was good and the people were friendly, most of the time.  Sometimes too friendly but that’s a story for another time.

I did not like the food at all but I loved the Raki which is a traditional Turkish drink.

More info here on raki.

All in all, I enjoyed my trip but I definitely wouldn’t go back to Turkey.  It’s one of those been there, done that situations.  Nevertheless, the travel bug bit and I’m infected – there is no cure!  On to the next destination…..

Ouch! 🙂 Istanbul is actually very pretty. Especially a walk along the Bosphorus is exactly what makes it beautiful besides the lovely mosques. Such a pity you didn’t enjoy it. I hope you do find another reason to visit it & fall in love with the city. And Turkey too :o)
